Effective Communication

”Stay positive” is a phrase many people use. In some instances, when one is having a difficult day, hearing these words may be really motivating. However, these words may seem out of place and even annoying to a person with cancer. The reality is that some people say inappropriate things without realizing it.

For this reason, it may be helpful to explain that it places pressure on you and makes you feel uncomfortable when they tell you to ‘stay positive’.

If they continue, try sharing a couple of other cancer warriors’ blogs with them to help them understand these words’ impact.

Guiding your family and friends on how to communicate appropriately with you, can positively affect your journey, and how you feel supported by the people who mean the most to you.
