Brave Face? Fake Smile?

By Lizzie Rubin, a certified sex therapist

Do I need to make others feel better? and a happy face? People with MS do it all the time. But you really don’t have to, especially not in front of your partner. You should be able to reveal the real you to your partner at all times: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Bear in mind though, that complaining or feeling low all the time can eventually become exhausting on a partner. Remembering that your partner may also be struggling a little may help you keep a balance.

Although you might be tempted to try and be strong for both of you, you might want to avoid this urge. Don’t pretend to be strong, but at the same time, you should try to better yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally for yourself and the sake of your relationships.

Remember our conversation about communication? It is probably best to be honest with your partner, who should love you for who you are and be willing to support you throughout your journey.

If you have any related questions, or subjects you want to discuss, please don’t hesitate to ask, either here or in the Sexuality & MS group.

Do you fake it in front of your partner? Do you keep it real? Please share with others in the group.

Yours,
