Can MS Affect your Relationship?

By Lizzie Rubin, a certified sex therapist

When MS diagnosis comes out of the blue, it is only natural to wonder how it will affect the quality and nature of your relationship.  How will you manage the changes? Will you be able to stay close, united, and connected?  Will you stay in love?

Life as you know it will most likely change, and so will you and, consequently, your relationships.

For some people, the relationship with a loving partner may be the only thing that sustains them through turbulent times.

I find that open communication is vital. Communicating your wishes and needs to your partner can save both of you from aggravation and frustration. Sometimes the partner might become a little controlling at the face of the new diagnosis, and therefore it is imperative to explain what you need assistance with and what you prefer to do by yourself. Do you need help gathering information? Making appointments? Running the household?  Your partner cannot read your mind.

If you have any related questions, or subjects you want to discuss, please don’t hesitate to ask, either here or in the Sexuality & MS group.

Do you communicate your needs? Please share with others in the group.

Yours,
